It was after work on Thursday evening when we decided to head down to East Coast Road for dinner to kick-start the long Hari Raya Haji long weekend.

We were torn between the nearer Siglap Road cluster of food places and the slightly further Joo Chiat Road end of East Coast Road. In the end, Bus 40 arriving ahead of Bus 32 made the choice for us and we alighted after it made the right turn from Siglap Road to East Coast Road.

Jin Wee was located in the midst of several drinking places all of which seemed relatively lively at 7.30pm. It was probably around 2/3 filled when we arrived and we were soon ushered to an empty table.

According to its own Facebook description, Jin Wee is an “old-fashioned family-owned Hainanese kopitiam since 1963”. The decor and signboard really showed.

With only two of us, we got just three dishes: Hainanese pork chop, sambal kangkong and homemade beancurd in special sauce.

The sambal kangkong was the first to arrive. Very standard zi char dish.

Sambal Kangkong

Next up was beancurd in special sauce. The sauce was indeed special; we could taste the distinctive salted fish flavour and it was also less thick than we were used to.

Beancurd in special sause

Hainanese pork chop was the final dish which completed the meal. The pork chop was crispier than it looked and the sauce wasn’t too sweet.

Service in Jin Wee

They weren’t the fastest in preparing the food; we waited probably around 20+ minutes before the first dish was served and another 5 for all to be done. As usual, the service staff’s voices was as loud as any other zi char stall’s Auntie and Uncle; we joked that the chef interviewed the staff from his kitchen, so that he could hear the orders coming through.

Final words

As the food quality was pretty decent, we wouldn’t mind returning to Jin Wee for their other dishes. The fish head charcoal hotpot from the next table certainly looked very appetising.
